BAFTA: 12 Years a Slave, Gravity Win Best Picture Honors

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts presented its annual awards on Sunday night, and the ceremony is unique among the major awards shows in that it gives out a prize for “Best Film” and “Best British Film.” Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave took the former honor and, puzzlingly, Gravity won for Best British film. That result was controversial since Gravity is considered by most to be a Hollywood film, but according BAFTA’s bylaws, the fact that the film had a British producer and was shot in the UK using a British visual effects company was enough. Not everybody was pleased, though, with some like Fearnet’s Scott Weinberg arguing that “real” British films such as Philomena or Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom should have been recognized instead.
