Calvin and Hobbes Creator Publishes First Cartoon in 19 Years
Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Watterson recentlypublished a new piece of work for the upcoming filmStripped. The piece marks the first published work in the illustrator’s 19-year hiatus. Calvin and Hobbes, the famous newspaper comic strip began its run in 1985 and ended in 1995 when Watterson retired.
Stripped is a documentary that will feature well-known cartoonists and a rare interview from Watterson. The New York Times broke the story, and reported that the cartoonist was so happy with the film that he wanted to create the poster art.
The documentary will highlight the art of comic strips and how cartoons are being affected by the decline in newspapers. Over 90 interviews were conducted for the film with cartoonists like Jim Davis (Garfield), Cathy Guisewite (Cathy), Mort Walker (Beetle Bailey), Jeff Keane (The Family Circus) and more. Stripped is available for pre-order here and is set to release on April 1, 2014.
