Sarah Michelle Gellar thinks awards season can make Los Angeles "so superficial".
The actress rose to prominence in the '90s playing the lead role in cult classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
As well as her acting work, 36-year-old Sarah is also heavily involved with various charity efforts. She recently promoted the Unilever Project Sunlight at the Independent Spirit Awards.
The project focuses on the future of children around the world and Sarah jumped at the chance to show awards can be about more than gowns and gossip.
"Initially when they came to me to host their section at the Independent Spirit Awards, I thought it was such an amazing opportunity because [Oscars] weekend in Los Angles has become so superficial," Sarah explained to FOX411.
"We now have cameras for manicures, and I think that actors have a lot more to provide than that. So many actors do so much for the world yet we are talking about their dresses and manicures.”
Far from finding the topic of conversation inappropriate for an awards bash, Sarah's peers relished the chance to talk about a subject that matters.
A whole host of famous faces enjoyed the event, which was held the day before this year's Oscars.
Michael Fassbender, Jared Leto and Cate Blanchett were among the celebrities in attendance.
"Everybody was so excited to talk about something different, something important. How we are leaving the world behind and what you want for your children,” Sarah enthused.
"It's not just celebrities sharing but it is everyone else sharing what they are doing. It’s not just the Hollywood realm but the people I meet on the street everyday that share their stories with me.”
