Valery Ortiz Interview

Valery-Ortiz-Interview
Stunning actress Valery Ortiz, 29, was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and later moved to Orlando, Florida. Today she is the lead actress in VH1’S new scripted series Hit The Floor, playing the role of Raquel Saldana.

Ortiz’s passion for dance began at a young age and subsequently earned her a scholarship to the Southern Ballet Theater Performing Art Centre in Orlando.

Currently training to run in an upcoming 26.2K marathon in Los Angeles, Ortiz is determined to finish a full marathon before her 30th birthday. Given her positive nature, it’s a goal she will undoubtedly achieve.

Film News had a chat with the vivacious Ortiz about her new role as Raquel Saldana and the daunting process of auditioning.

Film News - Which actors have influenced you?

I'm a big fan of Rachel McAdams for the sweet, captivating, characters she plays. She is just so amazing, and Angelina Jolie for the strong, commonly dark but sexy characters she plays. I really want to do both!

Film News - I understand that you are training for an upcoming 26.2K marathon in Los Angeles. How do you prepare for such a mammoth task?

I've been using an app called Run Keeper. I put in my goal and it's been keeping me on a training schedule since November. I have fallen in love with running again! It's been challenging but so fun. Unfortunately, I hurt my foot a week ago somehow and now waiting to rule out a stress fracture to be able to run my race March 9th. I've come so far so I'm really hoping I can still run it. If not, my goal was to finish a full marathon before I turn 30 so I will immediately look for a future race! I still have 5 months! Trying to stay positive.

Film News – Which songs do you like working out to?

*All the Above- Maino ft T Pain
*Drop it On Me- Ricky Martin
*Started from the Bottom-Drake
*Runaway- Pink
*Mile in these Shoes- J-Lo
*Lose Yourself- Eminem
*Cant Be Tamed- Miley Cyrus
*Gimmie Dat- Ciara
*Get Me Bodied- Beyoncé

Film News - You’re currently working on Hit The Floor as Raquel Saldana. What can you tell me about that?

Honestly, it's the thing I've been happiest about lately. I love the show as an actor and legit fan. I read new scripts like a groupie! Season two premieres May 26th and I promise you the fans will not be disappointed!

Film News - Have you ever forgotten your lines, or choreography during a performance? What happened?

Um, absolutely! It's the worse feeling!!! You stand there all blank faced trying to "stay in the moment" and search for what you know is going on in the scene to save it! Usually you have a great scene partner who looks at your desperate eyes and chimes in. Other times you call yourself out and just laugh. Makes for funny bloopers! That's the beauty of TV/film. You get another chance! Whew!

Film News - What is the scariest part of an audition?

The waiting room! You sit there in a room full of beautiful people most likely going out for the same role, you try and stay focused and make sure you know your lines. You wait and wait. Then you think "Maybe I should pee! No. I don't really have to go. I'm just nervous. Uh oh! I'm next! I definitely have to pee! Go pee! Pick up the big awkward key and go pee!" Ha! Ha! I bet others inner monologues are hilarious! The anticipation of it all makes it scary. If you choose to look at it as another opportunity and a chance to "play", auditions will start becoming less scary and more fun. But for me, always still a little scary!

Film News - Can you tell us a "secret" about yourself that nobody knows… until now!

A secret?! Hmmm I don't consider this a secret but something people may or may not know about me is that I'm kind of shy. I've grown so much and I'm so proud of my journey but more times than not, I still feel like the shy, uncool, insecure girl I was in elementary and middle school around things not related to performing. Quick example: I would get absolutely nervous to say "Here!" during role call back in grade school. It's so hard to explain because when it relates to the arts I'm excited (still nervous) but not the weird, kind of awkward kind.

Film News - Anything else you would like to share?

Thank you so much for the interview! (You are very welcome!! – C) Also, a big kiss to my friends and fans! This has been such an exciting journey for me and I hope I can continue to make you proud! And to my family, you're my everything. Words are never enough.
