Virgin Media launches 'Britain's fastest broadband service'

A new 152Mbps broadband service will enable customers to download an entire TV show in one minute

Virgin Media has launched a new broadband service offering a top speed of 152Mbps -- over ten times faster than the UK's average broadband speed of 14.7Mbps.
The new 152Mb top speed means that customers can download an entire TV show in one minute, but the ultrafast service really comes into its own in satisfying the demand for bandwidth as people use multiple connected devices online at the same time, according to Virgin.
The new service, which costs £28 per month (plus line rental), will be delivered over Virgin's fibre optic network, which is already available to 12.5 million UK homes.
Virgin Media’s entry-level service has also increased from 'up to 30Mbps' to 'up to 50Mbps', meaning that customers on cheaper packages will get a speed boost.
“From daily life to the bigger aspects of society, culture and economic growth, digital is making a significant, positive difference to people’s lives," said Tom Mockridge, Virgin Media’s chief executive officer. "We’re supercharging our incredible network to ensure that Virgin Media customers can make the most of the online world.”
Virgin also announced that, from today, new customers will be offered its parental controls technology, Web Safe, when they install their broadband connection. Web Safe works across all devices connected to the family’s home internet service, allowing the account holder to restrict access to types of potentially age-inappropriate websites.
The technology is available to existing customers and Virgin Media will proactively offer the technology to all its customers by the end of 2014.
Virgin Media is also launching Switched on Families, an interactive guide designed to support parents, grandparents and guardians in making informed choices about the online world. The guide offers advice on a range of issues such as who to trust, inappropriate content, cyber bullying and digital addiction.
"Parenting in a digital age is a constantly evolving challenge. The invaluable advice on this site will help empower parents to figure out what works for their family and how to best support their kids as they grow up," said Vicki Shotbolt, CEO and Founder of The Parent Zone.
Almost all internet service providers in the UK have now implemented safety filters, at the behest of Prime Minister David Cameron who said that they were vital to prevent children “stumbling across hardcore legal pornography”.
BT turned on its network-based filter in December. Those who opt to switch on parental controls will have to choose between three filter levels: strict, moderate and light. All three cover pornography, "obscene and tasteless" content, hate and self-harm, drugs, alcohol and tobacco and dating sites.
